- [STAI: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/72860-stai-state-trait-anxiety-inventory-for-adults) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 24, 2022): Charles Spielberger, R.L. Gorsuch, and R.E. Lushene developed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). They wanted a series of questions that would help to distinguish the difference between temporary anxiety, often referred to as "state anxiety," and the enduring kind of anxiety referred to as "trait anxiety."(Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, & Jacobs, 1983)

The inventory is 40 multiple-choice questions. Each question can be answered with: almost never, sometimes, often, or almost always. This version is intended for adults, and there is another version available for children, the STAIC.

As a self-inventory, it can serve useful for those who find themselves in caregiver roles. Research indicates that anxiety is a predictor of "caregiver distress." These studies also indicate that a caregiver's distress fluctuates with their strength and type of support systems (Elliott, Shewchuk, & Richards, 2001; Shewchuk, Richards & Elliott, 1998).

In clinical settings, the STAI helps doctors and therapists to differentiate anxiety from depression.
- [Business & Trauma Resilience: Lessons from My Great Grandmother, Signe](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/73518-business-trauma-resilience-lessons-from-my-great-grandmother-signe) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 20, 2022): The Peterson Resilience Consulting logo is a nod to my entrepreneurial and Swedish heritage and to my specialty in helping folks who've experienced high-control organizations and religious trauma. Not many people know this, but in the 1600's, Swedish Christians referred to the dala horse as a "devil's toy" because it had ties to underground pagan practices. Fittingly, among other things, today the dalahäst is also a symbol of resilience. But here's the real reason for the dalahäst: meet my great-grandmother, Signe. She and I share the same last name, eye color, hair color, and the same height: 5 feet, 4 inches.
- [Historical Trauma: Land Acknowledgement & Commitment to Restoration](https://www.resiliencepro.co/land-acknowledgement) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 18, 2022): I share the following personal ancestral truths to acknowledge the resulting historical trauma and its long-term effects. I never wanted to be that white girl who ignorantly benefitted from her ancestors' crimes against others, but Ancestry.com recently proved what I've always dreaded about my genealogy... Unfortunately, I am the descendant of those who colonized Massachusetts, on the rightful Lands of the Nipmuck and Agwam peoples. Historians agree that those compelled to fight in the American Revolution did so to retain their economic benefits from slavery. Sadly, my ancestors were amongst those volunteer militiamen. Even later, at least one branch in my family tree has proof of enlisting in the Confederate Army. :-| Undeniably, my ancestors constructed today's oppressive systems of white supremacy. I am not proud of this fact.
- [Holmes & Rahe Stress Scale](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/73069-holmes-rahe-stress-scale) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 11, 2022): The Holmes & Rahe assessment is a collection of questions about stressful life events. It was created in 1967 to measure the connection between stress and illness. There is a total of 1467 points for all 43 questions.

Please note that while there is good evidence that chronic stress can lead to ill health, there is not much evidence to support the *ranking* of stressful life events in this manner. Even though this assessment isn't perfect (doesn't leave a lot of room for "grey areas"), this stress scale is still a good starting point for self-learning and building coping skills.
- [I Don't Do "Sales Calls"](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/72853-why-we-dont-do-sales-calls) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 11, 2022): This one time I was on a really intense sales call... Somehow I was suddenly talking on the phone (gasp!) with a guy named Chad. He was pitching me the latest "life-changing" 12-week coaching "experience" that I was about to miss out on it! Oh no! ;-)

Throughout the sales call, Chad managed to do the following: blatantly ignore my lack of consent, gaslight me and my experiences, negged me strategically right before he... expected me to give him $10,000+ I couldn't help but nervous-laugh him off the phone! (Worth noting: This was the same laughter that ended all those dangerously awkward online dates I've experienced.) Yikes, Chad. *Double* yikes.

The online coaching community is notoriously awful about this kind of thing and they aren't the only industry. Coercion and manipulation are all over the business world. The more I've learned about trauma, the more I am horrified to remember my own sales "tactics" were just learned systems of my recreated (religious) trauma.
- [ProQOL Assessment: Professional Quality of Life](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/72858-proqol-assessment-professional-quality) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 9, 2022): The ProQOL is a self-administered assessment with 30 questions total, for understanding your balance of positive and negative personal and work experiences. The tool was originally created by Beth Hudnall Stamm, Ph.D.

"It is intended for any helper - health care professionals, social service workers, teachers, attorneys, emergency response, etc. Understanding the positive and negative aspects of helping those who experience trauma and suffering can improve your ability to help them and your ability to keep your own balance." ~ proqol.org

It is absolutely applicable for many other work environments too. If you aren't in a "helping profession" like the ones listed above, you can replace the wording of the questions with whatever is appropriate for you and your profession. (i.e., person, customer, client, employee, patient, etc.)

This assessment is a particularly good one to take bi-annually, to keep an eye on burnout or overall work satisfaction levels.
- [IAT: Implicit Association Tests ](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/73056-iat-implicit-association-tests) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jul 9, 2022): Implicit bias is unintentional and automatic. It affects us more than we realize. It's not abnormal to be shocked or embarrassed by the results of these 15 Implicit Association Tests. Please remember that the results do not define you, but they can empower you with better decision-making skills. This is why I highly recommend that everyone take these tests, especially my clients and other trauma survivors.

The IAT tests are offered by Harvard University and the results benefit research conducted by the University of Washington, University of Virginia, Harvard University, and Yale University.
- [MAIA-2: Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/maia-multidimensional-assessment-of-interoceptive-awareness) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jun 30, 2022): Interoception is the ability to identify, access, understand, and respond to the patterns and signals inside your body. This can happen consciously or unconsciously AND for many, it's a skill that can be learned and/or improved.

The MAIA assessment is one of many ways to track the progress of trauma resilience-building skills.

This questionnaire was funded by the National Institute of Health (NCCAM/NCCIH) and is available in the public domain. (Hooray for freely sharing healthcare & science!) A good way to think of the MAIA is as a science-approved measuring stick for your interoception skills.
- [BDI-II: Beck Depression Inventory](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/72859-bdi-ii-beck-depression-inventory) by Emily Ann Peterson (Jun 6, 2022): Depression is extremely common. Even more so for entrepreneurs. A study from UC Berkley reported that entrepreneurs were 30% more likely to have a long-term or life-long struggle with depression. This is why it can be helpful for some of my more entrepreneurial clients to take a self-report that can measure the general characteristics, symptoms, and attitudes of depression. This article, by Benjamin Lee, outlines some of the reasons why owning a business can play such a large role in depression.

So if you're like I was many years ago, then I'd like to say what my *own* therapist told me after I rattled off some typical-for-me feelings, "It doesn't have to be this hard. I'd like to help it make things feel not *so* hard for you." Sometimes, we don't know how hard things feel in the moment until we're given permission to feel differently and offered help.

Hopefully, an inventory like this can be a tiny little boost of help, if only to frame up and measure our normalized feelings. There are a ton of depression inventories out there. This one is called the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). In fact, the button below will take you to a page that has a couple more too.

In this post, you'll hear two cautionary tales from my mistakes. Both underline the benefit that an entrepreneurial trauma survivor gains from creating evidence-based business protocols. This especially applies to testimonials, referrals, and recommendations.

Understandbly, trauma affects our decision-making skills as business owners. We have more to gain than our trauma-free colleagues from establishing business protocols that are sourced externally using evidence-based methods. Creating external, evidence-based systems in our business ensures that when our trauma inevitably does become activated during a decision-making process, we have a dependable system that does not rely on a faulty internal system thwarted by trauma.

"An ACE score is a tally of different types of abuse, neglect, and other hallmarks of a rough childhood. - [Can Ecofeminist Theories Influence the Global Economy? ](https://www.resiliencepro.co/blog/72848-can-ecofeminist-theories-influence-the-global-economy) by Emily Ann Peterson (Mar 12, 2021): By comparing and contrasting the GDP, ECI rankings, product differentiation in exports, and anecdotal evidence from Singapore and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we find evidence that economics is an ecofeminist issue and that ecofeminist theory can influence the global economy. We also find that a country's decision-makers have a substantial economic incentive to create ecofeminist-influenced policies, standards, and regulations affecting domestic and foreign business development, trade, and commerce. Traditionally, ecofeminists are opposed to globalization. However, applying ecofeminist theories to commerce and global trade policies can reduce the masculine domination of nature and women.
